Resume length and editing

How Long Should a Professional Nanny Resume Be?

The right length depends on the depth of your experience, but every line should help an agency or family evaluate you.

Most professional nanny resumes work best at one or two pages. One page can be effective for a newer caregiver with a straightforward work history. Two pages are often appropriate for career nannies, newborn care specialists, family assistants, and candidates with extensive contracts, training, or household experience.

The goal is not to meet an arbitrary page count. It is to make your most relevant experience easy to understand without burying it under repetition.

When one page is enough

A one-page resume may be appropriate when you have a few relevant positions, limited formal training, or are moving into professional nanny work from babysitting, teaching, camp, or another childcare setting. Prioritize the experience that best supports the role you want next.

When two pages are justified

Use two pages when you have a substantial private-household career, several long-term placements, a meaningful contract history, specialized newborn experience, or a combination of childcare and household-management responsibilities. The second page should add evidence, not repeat duties already described.

Why simply shrinking the font does not work

Dense text, narrow margins, and tiny type make a resume harder to review and can signal weak editing. It is better to remove repetition, shorten older roles, and clarify headings than to force extensive experience onto one crowded page.

What to shorten first

  • Generic objective statements that could describe any applicant
  • Repeated childcare duties under every family
  • Old or unrelated positions with no connection to the target role
  • Expired or low-value certifications
  • References and full recommendation letters
  • Long lists of personal qualities without supporting evidence

What deserves space

Protect room for your current contact details, professional profile, accurate employment dates, children’s ages, distinctive responsibilities, relevant accomplishments, education, current certifications, and specialized skills. Recent and relevant roles should receive more detail than older experience.

Special consideration for contract professionals

Newborn care specialists and rotational professionals may have many shorter assignments. Keep recent or specialized contracts distinct and concise. Older similar contracts can sometimes be summarized in an additional-experience section, provided the format remains accurate and useful to agencies.

The final test

Ask whether a recruiter can understand your specialty, timeline, and strongest qualifications in less than a minute. If the answer is no, the problem is probably structure and prioritization rather than page count alone.
